Emotional Constriction

A biological basis for psychological disorder

12 March 2010

The re-classification of psychological disorders may help to get closer to developing useful biological foundations for some psychological disorders.

Useful diagnosis should not be reliant on self-reporting. All observations should be carried out using instruments or exercises with high levels of objectivity. With technological developments it will be possible to have people walking round in their daily life with instruments attached, measuring certain characteristics for later analysis.

Here we explore the following biological condition:

emotional constriction.

Should they be demonstrated as credible biologically based conditions, then concepts such as emotional constriction would complement the current DSM system. Being biologically based it is predicted that they would have greater correlation with medication regimes than the DSM, but more importantly would clearly indicate the kinds of treatments which would be of most help.

Emotional Constriction

12 March 2010

This is as a biological condition with the following manifestations:
  • constricted facial muscles: measurable through physical examination and testing
  • poor muscular connectivity in the chest: measurable through physical examination and testing
  • weak vocalization: measurable through sonic analysis
  • high reactivity (nervous response): measurable tension-relaxation characteristics eg: heart rate, skin resistance
An index of emotional constriction could be developed showing the varying levels of weakness in the different areas which would help with identifying usful treatment, in which HDT programmes such as EmotFit would feature.
